Many people are reading online about the Chicago shooting and about Marshall Russell, an employee of Owen & Engine who was shot to death.

Early on Sunday morning, a 32-year-old man was robbed and shot to death in Humboldt Park.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of North California Avenue outside of the California Clipper, police and friends said.

Russell was departing on a Divvy Bike, according to a friend of his, and he was a server at Owen and Engine in Logan Square.

As Russell was leaving the Clipper, a silver sedan pulled up and three or four people got out, Chicago police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill said. The group tried to rob Russell, leading to a physical fight and one of the people in the group firing shots at Russell, Tannehill said.

Russell suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Russell was a server at popular burger restaurant Owen & Engine. Owner Bo Fowler said he had worked there for about a year and a half, since the restaurant reopened after the pandemic shutdown.

According to the proprietor of Owen and Engine, Russell was a devoted employee as well as a kind and passionate guy.
Earlier this week, the restaurant was closed while staff members processed the tragedy.

One of those coworkers claimed Russell enjoyed MMA combat. His neighbors reported that he lived directly across from the California Clipper and had ambitions to become an architect or carpenter.

“His life was cut short as he was doing something, got a little bit of downtime after a long day of work, a quick beer and go home, and he couldn’t even make it across the street,” Preston Gamble said. “That’s sad.”
