Syd‘s melodic new single “Fast Car” is finally here!
The sultry yet groovy track, which is now available on all streaming platforms, celebrates young love, intimacy, and sunshine.
On discussing inspirations for the track, Syd emphasizes that “[she] wanted to make something for the gay Black girls.”
“I want them to see themselves in this and in me,” she shared.
Along with the song, Syd releases the music video for “Fast Car,” which features two women driving and hiking. The stunning pair sets the scene for the soft summer anthem.
Protesting her messages passionately, Syd sings, “Kiss me like you mean it now” and “We gon’ piss some people off.” Her lyrics are bold, and the soft gestures in the video beautifully contrast her poetry. The set up is a reminder that even the simplest interactions can grow the heart fonder.
Known for positively influencing audiences through her content and lyricism, Syd has been one the most important young voices in modern music since her origins in the industry. From beginning as a founding member of hip-hop collective Odd Future, to venturing off to the Grammy-nominated supergroup THE INTERNET, she has certainly made her mark in the music world.
Over the last few years, Syd has made herself an omni-present cultural icon. Since Fin, the 29-year-old has collaborated with Zayn, Lil Uzi Vert, Kehlani, and Disclosure,; wrote the song “Otherside” for Beyonce on the Lion King Soundtrack; appeared in a Louis Vuitton ad at Virgil Abloh’s behest; worked alongside Valentino’s head designer Pierpaolo Piccioli at Paris Fashion Week; shot an Adidas campaign with Pharrell; appeared in Drake’s video for “Nice For What” (alongside Olivia Wilde, Issa Rae, Letitia Wright and Rashida Jones); contributed the track “Getting Late” to the Queen and Slim soundtrack; opened up a charity, and built a recording studio in her LA home. Throughout it all, she has remained an innovative and self-defined master of sensual, future-forward R&B songs; writing, producing, and engineering all of her own work.
“Fast Car” is the first release since sharing her buzzworthy song “Missing Out” back in February and her 2017 critically-acclaimed debut album Fin. For those curious about Syd’s next big move, she is currently working on a film project, partnering on an apparel projects in Japan, and teaming up with an upstart Napa Valley sparkling wine brand.
